Virginia Auto Insurance Minimums in 2026: What 50/100/25 Really Means
Virginia requires new minimum auto insurance limits of 50/100/25. This guide explains what those numbers mean and how to update your policy.
The short answer
Virginia now requires you to carry 50/100/25 in auto liability insurance. This rule applies to all policies starting on or after January 1, 2025.
What does 50/100/25 mean?
These numbers describe liability coverage. This is money that pays other people if you cause an accident. It does not pay to fix your car or pay your own medical bills.
- $50,000 for injury to one person you hurt.
- $100,000 total for injuries to everyone in one accident.
- $25,000 to pay for damage to the other person's vehicle or property.
Where does this coverage stop?
A bad hospital stay can cost more than $50,000. If an accident hurts many people, the $100,000 limit may run out fast. You must pay any remaining costs yourself if your bills go over your limit.
What is uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage?
Virginia requires this coverage to match your liability limits unless you reject it in writing. We do not suggest you reject it. Many drivers in Virginia have no insurance. This coverage pays your bills if an at fault driver does not have enough insurance to cover your costs.
What other coverage should I look at?
- Medical payments pay your own medical bills after a crash regardless of who was at fault.
- Comprehensive covers damage from theft, hail, glass, or hitting an animal.
- Collision pays for damage from hitting something.
- A deductible is the amount you pay for a claim. Raising your deductible lowers your price but increases what you pay out of pocket during a crash.
